Stair Lift for Stairs With a Landing: The Two-Lift Solution

Been told your staircase needs a custom curved lift? If your stairs are two straight flights joined by a flat landing, there's often a faster and far more affordable answer: two straight stair lifts.

✓  Up to 50% less than a custom curved lift, with financing available

✓  Both lifts installed in one visit, with no weeks-long wait

✓  Rails attach to the stair treads, not your walls

✓  Free home assessment of both flights and the landing

How the two-lift setup works

Top floor

Lift 2 carries you up the second flight

Flat landing

Step off, take a few steps, sit on the second lift

Ground floor

Lift 1 carries you up the first flight

How it works

How Two Straight Stair Lifts Work Together

1

Ride the first lift

From the bottom floor up to the landing.

2

Cross the landing

The seat swivels so you step off onto flat floor. Take a few steps, or transfer with a helper, to the second lift.

3

Ride the second lift

The rest of the way to the top.

Each lift is a standard straight stair lift with its own rail, seat and controls. Nothing is custom-built, which is where the savings come from.

Two Straight Stair Lifts vs. One Curved Lift

The money saver

Two straight lifts

Cost: up to 50% less than a curved lift

Time to install: one visit, about 7–8 hours for both lifts

Rail: standard, cut to fit

Crossing the landing: short walk or assisted transfer

If one lift needs service: the other flight still works

If you move or needs change: standard parts are easier to adapt

The custom option

One custom curved lift

Cost: custom-built and quoted for your staircase

Time to install: 2–4 weeks to build the rail, then install

Rail: custom-fabricated for one staircase

Crossing the landing: stay seated the whole way

If the lift needs service: the whole staircase is out of use

If you move or needs change: the rail fits only the original staircase

A single straight lift runs $3,500 to $6,500 fully installed, depending on the length of the flight. Financing is available through Service Finance.

An honest check

Is the Two-Lift Solution Right for You?

Two lifts aren't right for everyone, and we'd rather tell you now. Check these three points.

1 Is your landing flat and roomy?

The landing needs to be a level floor with space to step off one seat and reach the next. A landing made of pie-shaped steps won't work.

2 Are both flights straight?

Each flight needs to run in a straight line. Flights can be different lengths.

3 Can the rider take a few steps or transfer safely?

This is the important one. The rider has to get from one seat to the other, alone or with a caregiver. If standing and stepping isn't safe, even with help, a curved lift that keeps them seated may be the better choice, and we'll say so.

A good fit when

The rider walks short distances, the landing is flat, and budget or timing matters.

Consider a curved lift when

The rider can't transfer safely, or the stairs curve with no flat landing.

Keep Your Home, and Your Savings

You shouldn't have to choose between using your upstairs and protecting your nest egg. Two standard lifts give you the whole house back without a custom price, and both seats fold away when you're not using them.

For Families Working Against a Deadline

When a parent is coming home from the hospital next week, a custom rail that takes a month isn't an option. Both straight lifts go in on the same visit, so the house is ready when they are.

How we work

We Check the Fit Before You Spend a Dollar

Our accessibility consultants measure both flights and the landing, watch how the rider moves, and tell you plainly whether two straight lifts will be safe. If they won't, we'll explain your other options, including a curved lift, which we also quote and install.

Either way, our team is on site for the installation, from the first rail to the final demonstration.

Stairs With Landings FAQ

Can you put a stair lift on stairs with a landing?

Yes. You can use one custom curved lift, or two straight lifts with a transfer at the landing.

Are two straight stair lifts really cheaper than one curved lift?

In most cases, yes, because nothing is custom-made. Two straight lifts can cost up to 50% less than one curved lift.

How far is the walk between the two lifts?

Usually just a few steps across the landing. We plan where each lift parks to keep it as short as possible.

Will two rails get in the way?

Each rail sits on its own flight, close to the wall side of the treads, and the seats fold up. The landing itself stays clear.

What if the landing has a 90-degree turn?

That's the most common layout for this solution, as long as the landing is a flat floor.

How fast can both lifts be installed?

In a single visit. Installing both lifts usually takes about 7 to 8 hours, with the Senior Home Solutions team on site.
